Sometimes, you forget what excellence is all about. You get so wrapped up in your day to day affairs, that keeping your head above water is about all you can think of. I’m having some problems with our heating system at the moment, so I recently had a repairman come out to give an estimate. I was blown away. He was thorough, meticulous, and professional. He not only spent several hours digging around to figure out what was going on, but he took the time to carefully explain what was going on. I was shocked by how much he really cared about getting the unit fixed properly.
Then he said something that made me want to cry. He told me how important it was to him to do good work. He wanted to be proud of what he did and who he was. Wow. How often do you see that type of passion? Sometimes, we spend so much time looking to what we want to become, we forget to be proud of what we are. We forget that everything we do is an opportunity for excellence. It really doesn’t matter what our profession is. Whether we’re a photographer, lawyer, repair person, or the President of the United States, taking pride in who we are is what life is all about. Embrace what you do. Love it and be good to others, and you’ll get back what you give.
Are we using him to do the work even though he’s on the pricey side? You bet. Did we refer him to others? Already did. Being good is caring and taking things so personally that it’s not about the time you put in. It’s about the quality you put out. It’s a sure way to guarantee you’ll stay in business when others struggle. What do you want to excel at?
