Putting things off is the kiss of death. Don’t research things more. Don’t wait for information. Don’t stall, because making the wrong decision hurts. Be the person who can take the pain, and you gain an immediate edge over every competitor, because most people can’t stomach it. They hold back. They slow themselves down. They create businesses that don’t have strong personalities, because they avoid the decisions necessary to create them. It’s all of the little things that matter. Figure them out, commit to a direction. What’s the worst that could really happen?
If you look at people from a 10,000 foot perspective, we all look and act pretty much the same. Zoom in more, and we start to act a little different. Get closer yet, and we acquire real personality. When you really know a person, they’re strange, quirky, and unusual. Aren’t most the people you know intimately kind of odd? That’s the type of depth you want your business to have, and you get that by making decisions.
The more granular a decision, the more it says about you. If I said I like sushi, that would be one thing. But if I said I like Kanto region rice over the style from the Kansai region that says something wholly different. The first is something that barely provides a sense of commonality. The latter is something to fight or bond over. Make your beliefs something clients will want to fight or bond over.
Every decision you make about your business from the mundane to the intricate is going to add up to something. It paints a picture of who you are. It makes you fascinating and real. I’m a sushi lover, but the truth is I didn’t know there was a Kanto region and Kansai region style of sushi rice. Apparently, one is sweeter and one is saltier. But you hear a statement like that, and you think “Wow! This guy really cares.” Without that detail, it’s just a bland blanket statement that sounds the same as everything else. And who wants to do that?
