Need to supercharge your creativity? Looking to trim some photographic fat, get lean and mean, and be ready to rumble? Here’s something to kick things in gear as the mid-year slump approaches. I am officially announcing the I Will Make You Suffer Workshop (hereupon referred to as the IWMYSW), a mashup between a casual get together and hell week during finals. The IWMYSW is a loosely-structured, full-throttle, small-group workshop for 3 and a half days from July 23-26 focused on photographic growth. It’s going to be awesome! Think drugs, partying, and shooting, except without the drugs and partying.
Here’s what you won’t get:
- A bunch of beautiful decorations from key wedding designers to post on Instagram
- A stylish brunch session dripping with New York charm
- A gang of photographers shooting gorgeous models styled and dressed in the latest neo-classic, vintage fashions for a sun-drenched addition to your portfolio
- Perfectly crafted handouts that tell you every insider secret you need to know to run your business
Ouch! That’s a horrible way to lead. But, seriously, there are plenty of people who already offer that, and it’s not really my schtick. If you read Ground Glass, you know what I’m about, and that’s what I want to give.
Here’s what you do get:
- An intense focus on making your personal vision part of a wedding photography business, and why it matters now more than ever.
- My undivided attention for the entire duration of the workshop
- Individual meeting time with me to talk about you, your images, and your business
- A kick in the pants to get you focused on stuffing as much of you into your photos as possible
- Creating work that challenges you and you’re proud of
Tell me more!
If you’re looking for a structured build-your-business workshop, this is not it. I’ve got that in the works, too, so be on the lookout for an announcement soon. But not now, not yet. This is a hardcore free-for-all about you as a creator. Expect to be shooting a lot, and expect to spend a lot of time getting out into the City and snapping away. You will learn how to use the results of this shooting to refine your own personal vision and to inject these values into your business. We’ll talk shop, we’ll talk business. There will be free-form group discussions. But plain and simple, this is a workshop about the love of photography.
The IWMYSW begins in the late afternoon on Monday, July 23 with a casual get-together at the office, aka mission control for the ensuing three days. Assignments will be determined at that point. It will wrap up towards the end of the day on July 26. Expect to push yourself, and expect to work both day and night. Three days goes fast, so we’ll be working around the clock to milk as much as possible out of the experience. I am looking for 6-10 participants, no more. Normally, this type of thing runs $1,500. Not here. Think dirt cheap. $225 to cover my own expenses to produce this. I can guarantee this is a one-time-only price. I will not be offering a workshop like this for that amount again.
OK, sign me up!
Woah! Not so fast! I want to bring together a group that challenges and complements one another. Who comes is as important as what you do. If you want to participate, send me three things by June 5 to info@ground-glass.com:
1. Submit 25 images that represent who you are or provide a specific essay or feature you want me to look at. The pictures can be personal or they can be wedding images. But they should show me what you’re after and what you care about.
2. Submit a paragraph or two to tell me who you are. Doesn’t need to be an essay. But I want to know a little about who you are, where you’re at, and where you want to go.
3. Send a link to your website.
That’s it! Selection criteria is going to be based on a number of factors, but above all, it will focus on creating the best group dynamic possible. Final announcements for admission will be made June 12. Admission will be closed as soon as I find a good set of people to work with, so submit your information sooner instead of later! Looking forward to hearing from you!

I think I just might make a submission. I have a friend on Ludlow, now if he will let me sleep on his floor… Hmm… This might work. What I like about this already is that it is not a bunch of “Bullshit” wrapped up in a pretty bow, awesome.

This will be a lucky group! Good luck going through all those submissions!
