Living in a world of game-changers

Game Changer:
1. A person who is a visionary.

2. A company that alters its business strategy and conceives an entirely new business plan. This type of company switches up and forms a new business strategy in order to compete directly or indirectly with competitors. A game changer changes the way that something is done, thought about or made.

And let’s be sure to add:

3. A hackneyed phrase with over 10 million results on Google to validate daily declarations of undeserved significance.

Does it ever feel like everyone else is doing something more important than you? Lately, I hear a lot about game-changers. Politically. Economically. Photographically. Artistically. Game-changers for technology, for photography, for film making, for culture, for life. You name it, there’s a game-changer for it. But the thing of it is this. If everything is a game-changer, nothing is. And we all know it. It’s hype for a hyperbolic world. But hype doesn’t make things big. It just makes everything else small.

As infectious as it all is, block it out. Forget the system. Forget the attention. Forget the game-changing. Bury it, along with the insecurity it all fosters. Leaving a mark means saying something. That’s how you change the game. And that’s exactly what pictures are all about. Don’t take pictures to impress. Don’t take them for awards. Don’t take them for publications. Forget keeping up, forget the flavor of the year, and don’t second guess your clients. If you always think no one will want what you can truly offer, you’ll never find anyone who will. Above all, never give up on who you are just because you think the world is asking you to be somebody else.

Everyone has a way of seeing the world. Everyone is moved by something. Cut yourself open, and let that thing bleed into every part of every day. Love is what counts. Love your craft. Love the message. Trying to be the Most Important Person In The World is just a distraction. Conviction on the other hand, will save us all. Find your message and hone it to a razor sharp edge. You see it in Frank, Weston, Nachtwey, Adams, Smith, and Eggleston. You see it in all of the best in every field. Land, Disney, Edison. You name it, they have it. Find that need so pressing and imminent that you will explode if it never gets out. Foster it. Refine it. Challenge it. And let it free. You do that, and you might just be the next game-changer.

i know there are sport psychologists and I’ve always maintained there should be photography psychologists…and this is about as close as it gets for me. I’m not a circle jerkin fan boy of anything but I keep your ‘Who to Get in Bed With’ post taped on my wall next to my desk. Thanks Spencer.

There should be. Photography psychology could be a new burgeoning field! I know what you mean. I think this site is my own form of self-medication. Very cool to hear, by the way – thanks for sharing.

thank you, thank you so much for this post, it hit me to the core and quite possibly a bit of moistness in my eyes. we all need conviction in who we are, what we do and what we’re trying to say. never forget it.

Hello Simon,I am using the INDIRECT function in my excel sheet2 to refer to cells in sheet1 by using the following formula :INDIRECT(“‘”&$D$1&”‘!D”&ROW()+”113″I am refering 116 row in sheet1 to 3rd row in sheet2, hence the +”113″. Now my question is how can I change my above INDIRECT function formula so that I have a way to refer to n-th row in sheet1 to 3rd row in sheet2.
