Taking a picture is all about looking inward. It’s not just finding a spot or identifying a subject. It’s connecting with that theme, and unearthing the subtext. It’s all about what it says to you and understanding how to communicate that to others. David Wittig picks a perfect spot for this image. The lighting is moody and rich, with a great contrast between the hardness of the brick and stone environment and the elegance of the chandelier. But the the thing that really makes it work is the pose. It’s always a temptation to go with something soft, romantic, or glamorous, but David takes a bolder approach, using body language that borders on confrontational. It’s a great move that’s enhanced by the angular overhead lighting and the starkness of the environment. There’s also some nice restraint here. This picture could easily have gone too far, but the subtlety of her pose and the immediacy of her expression keep it from entering the territory of melodrama, allowing the bride’s unabashed confidence to come through.
