Why selling doesn’t work and how to persuade

FACT 1: NO ONE WANTS TO BE SOLD.
Nothing creates resistance like knowing you’re being sold.

FACT 2: PEOPLE CAN’T REALLY BE PERSUADED.
Persuading is basically selling a point. Go back to Fact 1. Think about the trajectory of most disagreements:

Jack: I think this.

Jill: I disagree.

Jack: I accept your disagreement, but here’s why I think this.

Jill: I accept your thinking that, but I still disagree.

Jack: I accept your continuing disagreement, and I will say that you have a point to be polite and end this discussion, but I am not retreating from my original point, and I disagree even more, but I won’t voice it, so we can stop talking about this.

A few words on what finding a passion really means

You can live to own. Or you can own what you live. That’s the choice.

It’s the choice to decide to stare down the future and say this is mine or to look at the present and only want for more. It’s the choice to wish or the choice to dream. This is just beautiful

I was going to write this big ol’ post about selling without selling today, but then I stumbled across this video from Zen Garage in the morning, and I thought “Screw it. This is better.”

In this video, Marina Abramovic is giving a minute of time to each stranger who sits in front of her. This is taking place at her MoMa retrospective. She had an intense relationship with Ulay (the man in the Converses) in the 70’s, not having seen him since. She didn’t know he was coming.

Why people don’t get paid more and what to do about it

Trying to figure out where to get more business? Here’s a tip. Forget about chasing numbers. Numbers distract us from the central focus of what products and services do. They solve problems. Numbers do not.

Numbers will deceive you. Don’t think about a million hits or five thousand followers or a hundred thousand dollars a year. Focus on problem-solving. Figure out the best way – not just any way – to get one hit, one follower, or one dollar. If you find the right way to position your pictures, the right way to talk to your clients, and the right way to spread your name, the numbers will follow.
