The Royal Wedding

It wasn’t my plan to watch the Royal Wedding. I really wasn’t interested. Royalty is as foreign as crumpets and tea to me. So, the whole notion of it doesn’t register. But my baby girl had other plans for me. Waking up before the crack of dawn, I stumbled, bleary eyed and half asleep into the living room. I flipped on the TV to create a little noise to distract her, and there they were. William and Kate, and a largely worthless commentary. A little like the red carpet chatter, except a royal version – more often than not telling us about what we already know or what we could care less to learn.

There was a certain sort of … Read more...

Tim Hetherington

I don’t care what anyone says. I don’t buy that taking pictures of things you create is fine art, while documentation isn’t. Either it all is or it all isn’t. And I buy even less that one has more value than the other. It’s what you make of it. You make it work, it’ll speak. You don’t, and it isn’t worth the pixels you show it on. I also don’t buy that we need to make weddings better than they are. They are wonderful on their own. Moments are infinite. Craft it if you want, that’s fine, but it’s all there for you, either way. You just need to look. Life is like that. It’s slippery and fast. It’s hard … Read more...

See, now what did I say, right? Just a couple posts earlier, I said put the hand on the neck, and here you have it. Beautiful. It’s the type of thing only a romantic interest would do, so that hand conveys a distinct sense of intimacy. Rebecca has done a nice job adding two things to the mix. Shooting with the groom’s back to the camera was a nice choice. Just a little less common, and, more importantly functional. It not only gives the picture a more natural feel, as if you were peeking at them, but what truly makes it all come together is her expression. It’s a lovely smile, and she feels like … Read more...

Booking 100%

I was just speaking with someone who told me he booked 100% of his meetings and was fully booked every year. That sounds great in theory, but I guess my question is this. Why would you want to book 100%, if you’re fully booked all of the time? For that matter, I’m not even convinced that you want to book 100% if you’re not fully booked. But if you are, that means it’s probably fair to assume you’d be fully booked at a 80% or 90%. Quite probably lower.

Let’s assume 80% for the time being. If you can still be fully booked at 80%, that means you’d only need to compensated for the meeting times, since you’d take no … Read more...

Two quick poses

I’m sure these are going to get tired any second now – I see them so often. But for anyone out there who hasn’t tried them yet, these two tricks work quite nicely when posing. They’re quick, they’re easy, and they’re likable without being boring.

For an easy editorial look, have the bride lift her dress. While you’re at it, you can have her look down and back, as well. Lifting the dress creates a nice, natural feel.

If you want the create something romantic, have one of them put their hand on the other’s neck on the same side as the camera. It feels very personal.… Read more...
