Maybe it’s the dreary weather in New York today, or maybe it’s a secret desire to take a trip out to California until this winter officially passes (spring? This ain’t no spring!) that makes this my pick for the day. Whatever the case, you’ve just gotta love this sun-soaked shot of a couple on a boat. Now that’s what I call a prop! And yes, that prop makes a difference, but at the heart of it is a photographer who knows how to work with light and use the environment to maximum effect. No overt toning, no special effects. Just wonderful use of the light that was available, perfectly balanced and coupled with a delicate and … Read more...

Believing in what you do

I was looking at Rob Cordova’s wonderful wedding video (of his own wedding!) the other day, and I told him how much I really loved it. You can see it on his Facebook page. Rob has always had an amazing ability as an editor to dig into the humanity of a wedding. He senses the rhythm and pulse of the footage. There’s some great light going on here that adds a heightened sense of drama to everything, but even without it, this is another wonderful example of body language. I love the fact that the girl to the right has been captured mid-stride with her hand on the bride. Coupled with her head cocked to look behind the bride, you can almost feel the momentum pushing her forward. The bride’s downward gaze and the presence of second flower girl are just the right match, making it a picture that not only tells a story, but creates just the right sense of suspension.… Read more...

I heart F.U.

When you think about it, a brand is basically a big fuck you. It’s a fortitude that can withstand the pressures of the world beating down your door. It’s a strength of self that’s greater than money and recognition. Because, if it’s true in principle that an effective brand inspires and captivates, in practice, it’s just as much about resisting temptation and sticking to your guns. When the world tells you to change, it’s the resolve to say fuck you.

Insecurity and neediness destroy brands. For every company that has the foresight to make a lasting and durable statement, there are dozens more whose visions erode until they become pure commodities. If inspiration and character are the hallmarks of successful … Read more...
