It’s all in the last 10%

They say in golf you drive for show and you putt for dough, which is to say that it’s not the big swings that get you the win. They just look good. It’s the small little putts once you’re near the hole that count. Business is much the same. It’s not the big obvious stuff, but the little details. We live or die by the execution. Get the last 10% wrong, and the first 90% becomes a big waste of time.

Some shots are just cool. What can I say? This one is all about light and form. It’s a color palette and a silhouette, but it’s fun and lively, too. It’s taking the time to actually look around. Sometimes, you spend so much time staring at the couple or the people around the reception that you forget to just be on the lookout for something different and interesting. I loved the feel of this image – the lightness of the environment and the wedding touches contrast well with the subtlety of the girl’s mood. It’s a great pairing and a resonant image that magically comes out of the thin air. There was nothing obvious to work with, but the use of timing, light, and composition bring it all together. Placing the girl on the short side of the frame creates a discomfiting tension that mirrors her expression, while the shoes, the light, and the dark wood elements on the left and right of the image serve as counterpoints to balance it out.… Read more...
